Who We Are?

Rebel Girls is a youth-led mentoring platform for boys and girls that aims to nurture young adults to become active global citizens, empowering them to speak up and to drive change in the world they live, through stories of women who have broken barriers. The platform caters to children between the ages of 10 to 17 years. Through its various interventions, it touches upon different ways in which children can influence change, addresses gender as well as provides an opportunity for them to explore potential career paths and passions they may choose to follow.

According to UN Women, approximately 1 in 3 women across the world have been subject to some form of violence or abuse. As technologies like Artificial Intelligence evolve rapidly, along with increasing online interactions (especially through social media) becoming the new norm, it is critical to gain a deeper insight of the provisions regarding cyber safety and help make the online atmosphere a safer space for everyone.

This #childrightsweek, Rebel Girls Interactions features two of India's leading women lawyers, who will share their journey and will highlight how to develop a safe space for everyone, whether it is online or offline.

Congratulations Avani!

Avani Lekhara, a 19 year old shooter from Jaipur,Rajasthan has created history by becoming the first Indian athlete to win a gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.

Avani Lekhara experienced a terrible car accident in 2012, suffering severe spinal cord injuries. However, she overcame that obstacle by taking up shooting after reading the autobiography of Abinav Bindra: a renowned Indian olympic shooter. In 2019, she was named as the Most Promising Paralympic athlete by the GoSports foundation in India. Today, she is ranked World number 5 in Women's 10m Air Rifle standing SH1.

We hope she keeps achieving milestones in the future!

CONGRATULATIONS BHAVINA! Bhavina Hasmukhbhai Pate

CONGRATULATIONS BHAVINA!

Bhavina Hasmukhbhai Patel is an Indian parathlete and table tennis player from Mehsana, Gujarat. She won a silver medal in Class 4 Table tennis at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo.

She not only secured the first medal for India in table tennis for the olympics, but also the first medal for India in the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics.

She was diagnosed with Polio at the age of one, yet, she strived for her passion of table tennis, and has now become the second female athlete to ever win a medal for India in the paralympics. We look forward to her future endeavours!

Rani Rampal - Indian women’s Hockey team captain

Rani Rampal’s, a village girl, is the first-ever hockey player to win the prestigious 'World Games Athlete of the Year' award. So how did a village girl from a relatively humble background reach the pinnacles of Hockey globally?

It all began at the age of 6 when she began training at the Shahabad Hockey Academy in Haryana. Her father was a cart puller and her mom was a maid. They often struggled to make ends meet. And when she decided to become a hockey player, she was faced with immense criticism.

“Papa would earn Rs.80 a day and couldn't afford to buy me a stick. Everyday, I’d ask the coach to teach me too. He’d reject me because I was malnourished. He’d say, ‘You aren’t strong enough to pull through a practice session. When I told my family, they said, ‘Ladkiya ghar ka kaam hi karti hai,’ and ‘Hum tumhe skirt pehen kar khelne nahi denge. ’’

But Rani never never lost hope, fully dedicated to her dream to be a Hockey player. She made history at the age of 15 when she participated in the 2010 World Cup India. She was the youngest player and scored 7 goals in the tournament. That year, India finished 9th in the World Women’s hockey rankings, the country's best performance since 1978.

Today she is the Captain of the Indian Women’s Hockey Team.

As she leafs our country into Olympic Semi Final against Argentina, we wish her and the entire women’s hockey team best of luck!

Pusarla Venkata Sindhu, or popularly known as @pvsindhu1 won her 2nd #olympic medal - a bronze- after defeating Chinese badminton player He Bing Jiao. She is the first Indian female athlete to earn two Olympic medals and the first Indian female athlete to win these medals at consecutive Olympics!

Coming from a family of athletes, one may believe PV Sindhu’s journey was easier compared to other athletes. Never the less, her achievements are a result of painstaking amount of hard work and unfettered determination.

For over 12 years, her father would wake her up at 3 am to take her to Pullela Gopichand for training; walking around 120 kilometers everyday. She currently trains under South Korean coach Park Tae Sang.

Her journey thus has far has been one of hardwork, dedication, consistency and filled with personal sacrifices. Her physical and mental fitness has played a critical role in her success.

This #rebelgirl continues to inspire our generation! We hope that in the coming years, she is able to achieve even higher milestones!

Oh and we must add - so far all the medals that have been won by India in the Tokyo Olympics, have been won by #rebelgirls!!!

@dkumari.archer : Deepika Kumari, from being an daughter of a humble auto-riksha driver , to ranked world number 1 women's Archer, she has taken India to the Olympic Quarterfinals for women's archery this year.

@simonebiles - Considered to be one of the greatest gymnasts of all time, and was all set to win the record for most medals, recently dropped out of the Tokyo Olympic final to prioritise her mental health. She earn the silver medal for her team.

@alexmorgan13: Alex Morgan, is a professional American vegan soccer player. Shestarted her career at age 14. A mother of a year old baby girl, at age 32, this is her third Olympic games.

InBee Park - A professional golfer from South Korea, has been ranked world number 1 in women’s golf for 4 separate runs. Park is only the seventh player to win four different majors during her career and capture a career Grand Slam. In 2016, she won the first Olympic gold medal since 1900 in the women's individual tournament.

According to the United Nation's Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, one billion people, or 15% of the global population experiences some form of disability-some visible, some invisible. For us to truly be an inclusive and equitable society, we must learn accept people with diverse needs and abilities.

The theme of this session is Kindling Inclusion and Nurturing Disabilities (KIND). Featuring Disability Rights Activist and Nari Shakti Puraskar recipient, Ms. Malvika Iyer, this session highlights her inspirational journey, strengths and struggles of individuals with disabilities and how youth can work towards building inclusive societies.

This Constitution Day, Rebel Girls Co-Founder- Kartik Singh talks to Mihira Sood, the Executive Director, Centre for Child Rights & Juvenile Justice, National Law University-Delhi- about child rights, gender equality and the law.

About Mihira Sood:
Mihira is the Executive Director of the Centre for Child Rights & Juvenile Justice and a Visiting Professor of Law at the National Law University, Delhi.

She has been a practising advocate at the courts in Delhi since 2007, where she has acted in a variety of matters including on sexual violence, child abuse, family law, domestic violence, writ petitions, media law, consumer complaints, commercial disputes, criminal law and public interest litigation. She qualified as an Advocate on Record of the Supreme Court in 2014.

Mihira has extensive experience in public policy and advisory work, having assisted the Justice Verma Committee in recommending changes to laws on sexual violence, and having worked with UN Women on issues of access to justice for women and girls. She also advises a number of companies on compliance with anti-sexual harassment laws, and acts as a member of many of their Internal Complaints Committees.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), mental health issues account for 16% of global burden of disease and injury in people aged from 10-19 years.

The Covid-19 pandemic along with the lockdown across the country has brought a lot of changes and anxiety in children. This interactive online session helped children learn how to cope with the pandemic and things one can do to stay mentally and emotionally fit. Participants had an opportunity to ask questions, share experiences and learn tips to cope.
